When I installed a couple of years ago I decided to go a little bigger - at 42kw for my home and barn. My goal? Offset my energy use while diving into the world of bitcoin mining. But here's the twist: Adding solar panels was just the first step towards true energy independence as I soon found out that this alone was not enough to give our home a $0 electric bill. The installation produces nearly 3 times the energy we use; and yet, I still had an electric bill!
